Valley teams on course for promotion and the Final Four
Successful weekend in the DGL: The teams of GC Valley Munich are ranked first and second after the second day of play in the German Golf League presented by All4Golf. The men's second division team won their first match of the year - match day 1 in the southern group was cancelled due to the pandemic - at GC Domäne Niederreutin and outclassed the competition by 23 strokes. In the 1st Bundesliga Süd, the ladies once again claimed four points and, as two weeks ago, finished a commanding second behind GC St. Leon-Rot at the Frankfurt Golf Club.
It was a busy but ultimately satisfying weekend for Danny Wilde, the head coach of the GC Valley Munich teams: The men's and women's teams he coaches were in action at the same time, and both teams have big goals this year. The ladies want to reach the Final Four in any case and, if somehow possible, win the title of German Team Champion for the first time in the club's history. The men's team would like to finally move up to League 1 in order to first establish itself there and then, at some point in the not too distant future, also bring the prestigious DM trophy to the foothills of the Alps. And so far, the plan for the 2021 season is working out splendidly: With a convincing day victory across the board, the men booked five points on the credit account on Sunday and outclassed the competition. With an overall score of nine over par, the players from GC Valley München were 23 strokes ahead of the second-placed team from GC München Eichenried (+32) after 18 holes. Host Niederreutin (+37), GC Kirchheim-Wendlingen (+40) and GC Feldafing (+45) lined up behind them.
"It was a bearish performance by my team," said Danny Wilde with satisfaction, "and we didn't even start with the best possible team." Eric Dörrenberg was in absolutely outstanding form on the challenging par-73 course at GC Domäne Niederreutin, bringing an outstanding round of 69 into the clubhouse - the best result of the entire match day. With only one bogey, he recorded five birdies on his scorecard, paving the way to the day's undisputed victory. With precise drives in the middle of the fairway and safe irons into the green, he opened up numerous birdie opportunities and also converted from the distance. Wilde: "A very strong performance from Eric!" Because Nicklas Borrmann, Christian Apelt and Laurenz Baumgart played very good par rounds and Justus Lück, Florian Horder and Tarek Baraka contributed to the Valley score with 3, 4 and 6 over par - the stroke result was delivered by Niclas Gimmy with 13 over par - Team Valley ultimately prevailed clearly.
Only St. Leon-Rot too strong for the ladies
In the women's tournament in the 1st Bundesliga Süd, the Valley team also laid claim to the top place on the podium - at least after round 1 at Frankfurt GC: the team moved into first place, leading the competition with 11 over par and thus two strokes ahead of St. Leon-Rot GC. Another two points behind, the host Frankfurt and the Munich GC shared third place with 15 over par, while Fürth, which was promoted to the top, was already behind at this point with 45 over par. Coached by captain Constantin Schwierz - Danny Wilde had prepared the ladies including a practice round in Frankfurt, but this time accompanied the second division men on match day - the Valley women underlined their title ambitions.
Nina Lang and Verena Gimmy not only provided the best results for GC Valley Munich with rounds of 69 in round 1 on the extremely demanding par-71 course at Frankfurt GC, but also brought the best score of the entire field into the magnificent clubhouse.
Both shone with precise irons, earned numerous birdie chances and also converted successfully time and again on the faithful greens. Chiara Horder (+2), Selina Weiher (+6) and Sonya Knebel (+7) also scored for Valley, while Lilian Klug's +7 did not factor into the score.
"I like this course and was able to concentrate very well on the round today," said Verena Gimmy about her successful performance with two bogeys and four birdies. Especially on the back nine she showed excellent shots into the green, holed out for birdie on 14, 15 and 17 and also brought the good performances from practice onto the course. "We've been working a lot on the short game in team training lately, and that was absolutely noticeable today.
My irons were very good today, and then some putts fell on the really faithful greens." Her teammate Nina Lang also holed four birdies with two bogeys, was satisfied with her score of 69, but still saw room for improvement: "I wasn't that happy with my game today.
